I don’t like Rom-coms but I loved this one.

I’m sure if you follow any of my reviews here on You Can’t Unwatch It, I’m pretty open about my distaste for rom-coms. They just aren’t my cup of tea. I can’t be the only one that gets tired of really easy to fix communication or honesty conflicts. However, I’m not against watching if I’m not in the mood for anything really deep or I just want to laugh and get all MST3K on the flick.

But Always Be My Maybe was a really good rom-com. It was funny, quirky and unique which is hard to do with rom-coms nowadays.

If you don’t know about Always Be My Maybe, it stars Ali Wong and Randall Park as Sasha Tran and Marcus Kim respectively. Sasha and Marcus were best friends growing up and everyone around them was certain they would end up together. But after a bad argument in high school, they went their separate ways and when Sasha returns to San Francisco 15 years later, they reconnect but the question remains: are they meant to be?

Now the synopsis will make you think that this is just like any other rom-com and to a certain extent you are right. It does follow a formula that is pretty specific to rom-coms however the biggest difference would be the conflict between the two characters and how it affects their relationship. In Always Be My Maybe, there isn’t some contrived dishonesty or some hidden agenda on either part. It really is the story of 2 adults reconnecting after years and realizing there is something there waiting to be explored. The conflict comes from personal struggles and trauma that each party has to address honestly and put behind them so they can move forward together. Something that is missing in a lot of rom-coms is the communication factor that is so vital to the survival of any relationship and Always Be My Maybe addresses in a fun and entertaining fashion.

Did I mention that Keanu Reeves is in this? I think he’s actually why we decided to watch this movie. John Wick there was the tie breaker. And he wasn’t even the best part!

I really liked Always Be My Maybe. It’s funny, creative and a not so common place rom-com. My first impression was a thumbs up and the more I think about it, the more I like it.

Watch “Always Be My Maybe” on Netflix and decide for yourself. Is it a hit or a miss for you?
