Netflix has been really good at putting out some ridiculous original films, many of which are terrible, a few that are great and ones like I Don’t Feel At Home In This World Anymore that are just weird.
Entertainingly weird but weird.
Melanie Lynskey plays Ruth, a young nursing assistant, who is questioning her own existence and why people are such a&$holes.
After her home is robbed, she decides she’s tired of being a victim and wants to find out for herself who robbed her and regain her property with the help of her eccentric neighbor Tony, played by Elijah Wood.
I Don’t Feel At Home In This World Anymore is actually a pretty interesting watch and it was unexpectedly enjoyable. I had very low expectations of this film but it’s pretty good for what it is. For a film that treads the line of rather serious topics ranging from depression to armed robbery, it has some very well placed humor and the film doesn’t have a dark and grungy feel. And the folksy style music was a perfect fit.
I Don’t Feel At Home In This World Anymore has a “realistic” feel of an average person seeking their own justice and wanting to make things right. Ruth just wants people to stop being a-holes and get her grandma’s silver back. I can get behind that.
Lynsky played the sweet yet stifled Ruth very well (she’s kind of adorable) but Elijah Wood was what really made this film so enjoyable. Without him, the film would’ve been too rough and depressing.
Wood’s character Tony is the sidekick with the ninja stars. He doesn’t ask questions, he’s always there to defend Ruth, he eats cheese singles, drinks red soda and is an odd but simply profound voice of reason for Ruth. Ruth definitely needed to break out of her depression and stand up for herself but meeting Tony had the greatest influence on her. I’m not saying she needed a man. I’m saying she needed a friend like Tony.
If you’re looking to watch an off-beat comedy with a hint of tough material, I recommend I Don’t Feel At Home In This World Anymore. It’s a quirky film, featuring a bizarre story line that is just weird and fun. Pop some popcorn, crack open your favorite drink, preferably red, grab some of your favorite people and enjoy.
